Designer Kitchen Cabinets 101: What Style is Best for You?

kitchen-cabinets-101When it comes time to start choosing all of the materials for your kitchen or bathroom remodeling project, it pays to take some time to think about all of the different options that are available to you. Taking a trip to the local cabinet outlet is a great way to see what they have in the way of solid maple bathroom vanities, kitchen specialty cabinets and accessories, designer kitchen cabinets and other materials for a bathroom remodel in Southeastern Massachusetts. Once you are able to see all of the cabinets, cupboards and vanities in person, you will be able to make a much more informed decision about the type that you want.

The Basics of Cabinet Design
The good news is that learning about designer kitchen cabinets if fairly easy. While it might seem overwhelming the first time you walk into a showroom, it is important to understand that there are only four basic types of cabinets for you to choose from for your residential remodeling project. Starting with the easy stuff, such as what type of design you need for your home, you can then move onto making other decisions, such as the color, type of wood and other decorative features.

  • BASE CABINETS – This type of cabinet is used both in kitchen and bathroom designs. It is the base cabinet that sits on the floor. A standard base cabinet is 36 inches tall. Bathroom vanities are sometimes shorter, but the taller ones are more popular with homeowners because they are more comfortable to use at that height. The depth of the typical kitchen cabinet is 24 inches deep, however some units are deeper at about 27-28 inches. The idea is to choose a cabinet design that is comfortable for you to use, so while you are looking at designer kitchen cabinets, make sure to open doors, reach in and test it out to see how you would feel using it in your home.
  • WALL CABINETS – This type of cabinet is what is sometimes referred to as a cupboard. Fixed up on the wall, these are more common in kitchens than in bathrooms, but they are sometimes used for a larger bathroom remodel in Southeastern Massachusetts to be used as storage. Most upper cabinets like this are approximately 12 inches in depth to allow for comfortable countertop use, however there are some that are 16-17 inches in depth to be used with deeper base cabinets. Custom and semi-custom applications are common with wall cabinetry.
  • TALL CABINETS – In most kitchens, tall cabinets are placed alongside refrigerators or at the end of a kitchen space. They are used most often as a pantry or, if there aren’t any shelves inside, sometimes as a broom closet and paper product storage. In most cases these cabinets are 83-84 inches in height, but custom and semi-custom options are often available depending on the type of kitchen design, application and style.
  • SPECIALTY – Becoming more popular with homeowners, kitchen specialty cabinets and accessories are a great way to create a custom look and feel. Specialty designer kitchen cabinets and solid maple bathroom vanities can be used to maximize the space of the actual kitchen design and aid in organization. Some of the cabinets in this category that are used for a bathroom remodel in Southeastern Massachusetts include corner pieces, hutches and other types of storage. Cabinets in this category for a kitchen remodel include bottle racks, cooktop fronts, sink fronts, corner cabinets, appliance cabinets and suspended units.

Cabinet Quality Levels
The next thing you need to understand is that kitchen cabinets come in a variety of quality levels that are available in corresponding price points. If you are doing a budget kitchen remodel, there are options available – even in the kitchen specialty cabinets and accessories – that are in that price point. If you are doing a “dream kitchen” remodel, you will find quality levels available in a variety of pricing levels, starting at basic all the way on up to custom designer kitchen cabinets.
